About Populus

Our founders met at UC Berkeley in 2012 as research scientists where they built open source software that powered forecasts for the San Francisco Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) to predict and plan the next 30 years of travel. New services like Uber and Lyft were beginning to emerge in San Francisco. Back then, our founders believed that cities should have data and information to plan for a rapidly-changing transportation landscape, and they dedicated their careers to gathering new data and information that could help cities evaluate the impacts of shared mobility and steer them towards societal goals.

In 2017, after building data and software solutions in the service of public agencies at Synthicity, UrbanSim, moovel, and Stanford, Dr. Clewlow and Dr. Foti co-founded Populus to empower cities with access to new data to plan for the future of mobility. Both had earned their PhDs in transportation and urban planning from MIT and UC Berkeley, and have a combined 20+ years of experience delivering software solutions for and with public agencies.

In early 2018, Populus launched our platform, Mobility Manager, to support cities’ abilities to securely access data from shared bikes, cars, and the rapidly-expanding new service that had arrived – electric scooters. Today, over 50 cities and the world’s leading mobility operators uniquely trust Populus to deliver the data and information that can help them deliver a safe, equitable, and sustainable transportation future.

POPULUS PARTNERS WITH U.S. DOT TO LEVERAGE INNOVATIVE DATA TO IMPROVE TRANSPORTATION SAFETY

The U.S. Department of Transportation and Populus have joined forces to harness mobility data to reduce crashes and traffic fatalities.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.

Populus, the industry-leading platform for cities to manage transportation and mobility services, will partner with the U.S. DOT to identify opportunities to harness data from some of the 45 million trips it has already processed from shared bikes, electric bikes, and electric scooters to facilitate micromobility management.

The main goal of this initiative is to deliver departments of transportation with new digital and predictive solutions that decrease traffic fatalities on U.S. roads, which have increased at alarming rates, particularly among cyclists and pedestrians. Populus will work with the U.S. DOT and strategic partners to leverage big data from micromobility to reduce the risks of crashes and improve transportation safety outcomes. Populus will also use its data from representative surveys in 18 major metro areas to demonstrate the value in qualitative data collection related to safety issues. These new data sets will augment existing data sets that inform transportation safety analyses. The initiative will aggregate data in representative cities in the United States, from major metropolitan areas to more auto-oriented cities with lower population densities, to provide insight into the new data sources that can be broadly applied to different geographies.

The U.S. DOT’s Safety Data Initiative aims to evolve from retroactive to proactive analysis. By integrating existing and new data sources, the U.S. DOT hopes to identify and address emerging risks from new modes and patterns of transportation so that they can intervene more quickly to save lives. By moving towards predictive analysis, the U.S. DOT hopes to reduce the number of fatalities that occur on U.S. roads each year.

“Populus is excited to work with the U.S. DOT on the Safety Data Initiative to provide novel and actionable insights from previously untapped data sources,” said Regina Clewlow, Populus co-founder and CEO. “Identifying new exposure risks early is incredibly important to create safe and sustainable streets, especially as new modes of transportation are proliferating at a faster pace than we have seen in recent history.”

Member News: Populus Partners with Cities Around the World to Manage Flexible Street Policies for Reopening

As local policies rapidly change, Populus will deliver digital solutions to cities from New Orleans to Pittsburgh to coordinate dynamically changing street needs, including adding bike lanes, outdoor dining, and curb loading zones

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. July 9, 2020 — Populus, the industry-leading platform for public authorities to manage transportation and mobility services, today announced they have expanded their partnerships with cities from around the world to advance digital tools to create and communicate new street policies that help their economies reopen safely. Cities that are leveraging Populus’ expanded platform features for flexible management of their streets and curbs represent a wide variety of geographies, including New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Orlando, São José dos Campos, Baltimore, and Boston.

More than a dozen cities are using Populus’ new Street Manager solution to support their unique needs for reopening public spaces such as streets, sidewalks, and curbs. The partnership comes at a time when city transportation officials are faced with the challenge of redesigning and adapting their streets for new use cases, from creating dedicated spaces for biking and walking, to expanding curbside areas for outdoor dining, pick-up, and delivery.

Populus’ advanced technology suite empowers cities to identify temporary or permanent street policies, communicate them to the general public, and digitally provide up-to-date information to key mobility stakeholders such as mapping platforms and delivery services. Many cities are using Street Manager alongside Populus’ mobility management solutions which help them securely receive and analyze data from mobility fleets, such as shared scooters, mopeds, and cars, to support data-driven transportation policy and planning.

“Populus Street Manager provides New Orleans with the ability to update our digital infrastructure and communicate outwardly where in our transportation network each mode has access,” said Daniel Jatres, the Policy and Program of the New Orleans Mayor’s Office of Transportation.

The Populus platform currently supports complex curbside pricing policies for mobility fleets, such as carsharing. In addition to implementing data-driven curb management, this year many cities found that they had broader street policy changes requiring urgent action in light of how COVID has re-shaped transportation and public infrastructure needs.

“Pittsburgh has a variety of needs when it comes to communicating new street policies, ranging from new curb loading zones to streets that prioritize bikes and pedestrians,” said Tosh Chambers from The City of Pittsburgh. “Populus provides us with digital solutions that make it easier to update and communicate these policies broadly.”

“Cities of all sizes are grappling with how to best manage access to public spaces that can be shared safely,” said Regina Clewlow, Co-founder and CEO of Populus. “The ability for transportation officials to dynamically manage and communicate changes about how their streets should be used is increasingly important as policies change on a day-to-day basis in response to COVID.”

Member News: Populus Releases New Guide to Mobility Data

Populus Releases New Guide to Mobility DataCities around the world are adopting new policies and solutions to more dynamically manage their streets and curbs – we are seeing many of these changes accelerate in 2020. From data standards to shared mobility program design and evaluation, below are a few new resources to help cities and operators align on shared goals to help people and business move safely and efficiently.

A Practical Guide to Mobility Data Sharing

This report presents a basic overview of mobility data sharing practice and policy issues for regulatory agencies, such as cities, and mobility operators, including micromobility services.

While the concept of mobility data sharing extends beyond dockless bikes and scooters, micromobility services accelerated the ability of cities to require vehicle and trip data from private fleets of vehicles in exchange for the right to operate in the public right of way – i.e., the streets, sidewalks, and curbs that cities manage.

This report highlights key city use cases that necessitate mobility data, current standards, and key policy issues.
