A bill passed by the New Jersey General Assembly yesterday may fund projects to ease access to mass transit by placing a tax on parking.
Drivers in the state’s six largest cities would pay a 3.5 percent tax on parking if the bill becomes law. The tax would not apply to special-event parking, and city residents could get a discount of up to 8 percent. The taxes would fund projects to improve pedestrian access to mass transit. The bill passed the assembly but not without strong opposition by some lawmakers.
