Inclusive Streetscapes challenges practitioners and decision-makers to rethink how streets are planned, designed, built, operated, and maintained. Drawing on transportation practice and the perspectives of people with disabilities, this framework examines common streetscape elements through the lenses of accessibility, safety, usability, and human experience.

About the Author

Benito O. Pérez, AICP, CTP, CPM, PTMP (he/him) is the Section Chief for Transit Capital, Statewide, at the Illinois Department of Transportation. He previously served as Transportation Policy Director at Smart Growth America and held several transportation planning and policy roles at the District Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C. His work has spanned transportation policy, curbside management, data analysis, active transportation, equity and inclusion, and the intersection of transportation and land use. He has worked with practitioners, policymakers, and community stakeholders to develop policies and strategies that improve how transportation systems serve people and communities.

Prior to his work at DDOT, Benito was a Transportation Engineer with the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization and worked with the Maryland State Highway Administration on equity and inclusion in transportation. He holds a Master of Arts in Urban Planning and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida.
