Slidr Launches FSU Safe Ride with Fleet of Volkswagen ID. Buzz Vehicles, Free On-Campus Rides, and Flat $6 Off-Campus Pricing for Students
Tallahassee, FL — Florida State University has replaced its Lyft-based student safe ride program with FSU Safe Ride, a new dedicated electric microtransit service operated by Slidr. The program gives students a reliable, low-cost way to get around campus and the surrounding community, replacing the unpredictable pricing and availability of third-party rideshare with a service built specifically for FSU.
FSU Safe Ride operates with a fleet of all-electric Volkswagen ID. Buzz vehicles and a hybrid ADA-accessible vehicle, making FSU one of the first universities in the country to run a student transportation program on the ID. Buzz platform. Rides between any FSU properties are free for students, and rides to anywhere off campus within the service area are a flat $6 with no surge pricing, even during peak weekend hours.
“The new service has been fantastic, and working with Slidr has been incredibly easy from day one. Our students love it, and so do we. It’s exactly what a modern campus transportation program should look like,” said Richard Rind, Director of Parking and Transportation at Florida State University.
“Universities across the country are rethinking their relationship with rideshare companies,” said Michael Trombino, Founder of Slidr. “Students need predictable pricing, dedicated drivers, and a service that is actually built for them. FSU Safe Ride delivers that, and we’re proud to do it with a fully electric fleet that reflects where campus transportation is headed.”
How FSU Safe Ride Works
Students book rides through the FSU Safe Ride app. The service is designed around student safety, with dedicated drivers trained specifically for the program and vehicles operating during peak late-night and weekend hours when students most need reliable transportation.

A Shift Away From Rideshare
FSU joins a growing number of universities nationwide moving away from Lyft and Uber safe ride partnerships in favor of dedicated microtransit programs. The shift reflects concerns about surge pricing, driver availability on nights and weekends, and the lack of accountability when using general-purpose rideshare for a student safety program.
By operating a dedicated fleet, FSU Safe Ride gives the university control over service quality, pricing, and accessibility. The inclusion of a hybrid ADA-accessible vehicle from day one ensures all students can use the service, not just those who can board a standard vehicle.
