Bethlehem, PA – The Bethlehem Parking Authority and the City of Bethlehem are excited to announce that the Coalition for Appropriate Transportation (CAT) will be one of the tenants in the planned first-floor retail space of the new Walnut Street Garage, which is currently under construction and set to open in late 2025.

“This partnership represents a thoughtful approach to planning and urban development,” said Darlene Heller, Director of Planning and Zoning for the City of Bethlehem. “By integrating CAT into the Walnut Street Garage, we are reinforcing the city’s commitment to providing sustainable, multi-modal transportation options that connect our neighborhoods”.

The Coalition for Appropriate Transportation is dedicated to advocating for sustainable transportation solutions. Once completed, their space in the new Walnut Street Garage will serve as a hub for education, resources, and community engagement. This collaboration aims to inspire residents and visitors to embrace active transportation, including biking and walking as viable modes of transportation, contributing to a safer and more pedestrian-friendly environment.

Mayor J. William Reynolds expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “The Coalition for Appropriate Transportation will play a vital role in connecting our downtown and enhancing our transportation network. By promoting biking and walking, we are not only creating safer streets but also fostering a sense of community that encourages residents and visitors to explore all that Bethlehem has to offer. This initiative is a key part of our vision for a more connected and vibrant city.”

Bethlehem Police Chief Michelle Kott highlighted the initiative’s significance, saying, “Promoting biking in our community not only supports healthier lifestyles but also enhances connections among residents. Having safe cycling infrastructure is essential for ensuring that everyone can share and enjoy our streets together. This initiative is critical for public safety and building a stronger community.” Sgt. Joshua Rymon added, “CAT has been an incredible partner for bike safety and accessibility, and having them right in the heart of the downtown area will be a perfect fit.”

Steven Fernstrom, Executive Director of the Bethlehem Parking Authority, emphasized the new garage’s purpose, “The Walnut Street Garage was designed with a focus on parking efficiency and enhancing community connectivity. By creating this hub that links parking, biking, walking, and public transportation, we’re making it even simpler for residents and visitors to navigate the downtowns. CAT’s presence will enhance this mission, promoting active transportation and sustainable mobility options.”

Scott Slingerland, Executive Director of CAT, emphasized the organization’s commitment to community engagement: “We are thrilled to have a permanent home in downtown Bethlehem, which will allow us to further promote active transportation and educate the public on the benefits of biking, walking and public transit. Our new space in the Walnut Street Garage will serve as a hub for outreach and support, providing a resource for residents and visitors alike.”

Ben Guthrie with Bethlehem’s Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) said, “Having CAT downtown will make their efforts more visible.  It will also mean more biking events that begin and end downtown, where people can walk to shops, restaurants, and other destinations. The EAC is looking forward to working with CAT to advance the Climate Action Plan, and to make Bethlehem a safer and more fun place to walk and bike.”

Ty Versocki, Downtown Bethlehem Chamber Manager, remarked, “Having a tenant like CAT will add to the vibrancy of downtown by encouraging more walkers and bicyclists to fill our streets. It will not only make our downtown more accessible but also help drive foot traffic to our many retail stores and restaurants. This partnership supports a downtown experience that is dynamic, thriving, and connected.”

A press conference announcing this exciting partnership took place on Wednesday, October 23, at 3 PM at the Walnut Street Garage development site.
