I like to think I’m tech savvy. I love geeking out on systems thinking, automation, and leveraging technology to work smarter. In many ways, I’m very excited about what AI can do. At the same time, the proliferation of AI slop, occasionally frustrating shortcomings of the tools, and the sheer ubiquity of the topic in our personal and professional lives sometimes leaves me thinking “enough with the AI already…”.
If this resonates with you, here are a few ways to reap the maximum benefits from AI without getting lost in the hype or succumbing to AI-fatigue:
- Create a culture of experimentation collaboration. Seeing examples of how colleagues are using AI to do things that simply wouldn’t have been feasible otherwise has been inspiring, and hearing them share insights on the process they used to get there has significantly shortened my learning curve.
- Take breaks as needed. Sometimes it’s nice to get back to basics and do things the old fashioned way for a bit.
- Reflect on your true bottlenecks. Operating sans-AI for periods of time helps pinpoint the tasks that I’d like to optimize. Keep a running list of these.
- Learn about the different types of AI models and tools. No one tool is ideal for everything, and using the right tool for the job makes all the difference. Your list of challenges and bottlenecks can help guide your research to what’s most impactful for your needs.
- Experiment. Throughout your day, stop and ask “how could AI help with this?”. A little extra time spent on trial and error can pay dividends once you hit a breakthrough. And not every experiment will be a success the first time; sometimes you just need to get the job done and update your research list to try a new approach next time.
