ITE & IPMI Launch Strategic Partnership to Update Landmark Parking Generation Manual

ITE & IPMI Launch Strategic Partnership to Update Landmark Parking Generation Manual

The Institute for Transportation Engineers (ITE) and the International Parking & Mobility Institute (IPMI) announced a new strategic partnership in support of an updated version of ITE’s landmark publication, the Parking Generation Manual (PGM).  Currently in the 5th edition, the PGM follows the lead of the modernized, updated, and expanded Trip Generation Manual, 10th Edition. The PGM differentiates parking demand levels based on extensive data collected at rural, general urban/suburban, dense multi-use urban, and center city core sites based on land-use type.

Partnership to Update Parking Generation Manual

ITE and IPMI are jointly issuing a formal Call for Data to support the next edition of the PGM.  Data will be analyzed and released in aggregate for the manual and a companion web-based ParkGen application. For more information on how data is aggregated and utilized, reference ITE’s Frequently Asked Questions.  All data is held in the strictest confidentiality and will only be released in aggregate; specific sites and data sets are not available or identifiable in the final publications and resources.

The PGM supports parking requirements and decision-making throughout the country and is heavily referenced in zoning codes that specify parking requirements for land uses. This effort will update and modernize the critical baseline data set used in the PGM.

Call for Data Details

The joint Call for Data will source both pre- and post-pandemic data sets including but not limited to residential, hospital, municipal, airport, and other land uses.  Data will include off-street and on-street counts and offer expanded resources for both suburban and urban environments.  The call will utilize the new Alliance for Parking Data Standards.  The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certified data specifications will streamline the submission process, make the data more accessible, and maximize utilization by owners and operators of parking assets worldwide.

Jeff Paniati, ITE Executive Director, shares more on the new partnership and its industry impact:

“We are pleased to enter this partnership in support of the next edition of the Parking Generation Manual.  Working together we can ensure that the data supporting the PGM is as up-to-date and robust as possible. Our goal is to continue to provide a resource for communities to use in making good decisions on future parking needs.”

IPMI’s CEO, Shawn Conrad emphasized the importance of the strategic collaboration:

“Our members and colleagues have the critical information required to enhance the upcoming edition of the manual.  Parking facility owners and operators in every market segment will now be able to share their aggregated demand data to both broaden and deepen the data that forms the foundation of this pivotal publication.”

Companion Guide to the Parking Generation Manual

ITE and IPMI will also release a new Companion Guide to the Parking Generation Manual, which will provide background, context, and best practices on how to use and apply the manual.  This Guide will address changing needs and trends that impact trips and parking assets, including freight and urban pick up and drop off zones, TNCs (Uber/Lyft), micro-mobility, electric vehicles (EVs) and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), and Americans with Disability Act (ADA) guidelines.

The Call for Data will open mid-April to collect this critical industry data.

IPMI Releases Industry-Wide Electric Vehicle Readiness Survey

March 8, 2023

IPMI releases landmark survey to capture critical benchmarks and data on industry readiness to prepare for electric vehicles and charging needs to support national initiatives.

Electric vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure are poised to transform the parking, transportation, and mobility industry. The launch of the NEVI program, along with complementary federal, state, and local funding, policies, and programs, represents a generational opportunity for the parking and mobility industry to play a pivotal role to plan, deploy, and maintain required charging infrastructure to advance the adoption of EVs and electrification across the nation.

IPMI released its inaugural landmark EV Readiness survey to capture critical benchmarks and data on the state of the industry’s readiness to prepare for electric vehicles and charging needs to support national initiatives.  Open to all industry professionals, this critical survey will close April 5.

Developed by the IPMI Board of Directors, its new EV Readiness Cohort along with the support of hundreds of IPMI expert volunteers, the 2023 IPMI Electric Vehicle Readiness Survey will capture insights and benchmarks on the current state of EV readiness, Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE), and EV fleet deployment industry-wide, as well as anticipated demand and related impacts to the industry.

“The adoption of electric vehicles for both patrons and fleets in parking, transportation, and mobility represents a sea change in our industry,” said Shawn Conrad, CAE, CEO of the International Parking & Mobility Institute (IPMI). “The NEVI program, along with the multitude of federal, state, and local incentives, will help support this massive initiative nationwide towards smarter cities, greener infrastructure, and greater mobility options. The International Parking & Mobility Institute has launched this survey and several programs in the areas of electrification and EV readiness for our members and the industry at large. We look forward to advancing EV adoption throughout our membership to the benefit of our members, our communities, and the nation.”

Gary Means, CAPP, IPMI Board Chair shared his perspective on our role as an organization to shape the industry's guidelines on deploying additional EV capacity: "IPMI initiated the EV Readiness Survey to collect critical data to help our members assess their readiness to deploy charging capacity for patrons and the greater communities that we serve. We are dedicated to driving the industry forward to create greater mobility choices, including support for electric vehicles. Results will be used to develop research and resources that help professionals prepare for anticipated demand, as well as enhanced services for fleets.  We encourage you to respond and share the survey with your networks so we can maximize our impact to support electrification and greater sustainability programs and policies."

Supported by IPMI’s 2023 Exclusive EV Readiness Survey Sponsor, FLASH, IPMI will seek industry feedback through our partnerships and platforms, including the Global Parking Association Leaders, 19 affiliated State and Regional parking and mobility associations, and numerous industry partners like the CHARGE Coalition.

Member News: Alejandra “Alex” Argudin, CAPP, Named CEO of Miami Parking Authority

Alejandra ArgudinIn a unanimous vote, the Board of Directors of the Miami Parking Authority (MPA) appointed Alejandra “Alex” Argudin, CAPP, as its next chief executive officer. She is a member of IPMI’s Board of Directors, currently serving as the organization’s treasurer.

Argudin becomes the first woman CEO of the MPA in its more than six decades of existence; she brings more than 13 years of experience with the Authority, nine as chief operations officer. In that capacity, she has led a number of forward-thinking initiatives that have positioned the Authority as a leader in the parking industry, including an increase in the utilization of PayByPhone in Miami from about 23 percent five years ago to an impressive 93 percent adoption rate. This success story has placed the MPA as the leading parking organization in volume of PayByPhone transactions in all of North America.

“Alex’s unique vision, experience, and transformational leadership style make her an excellent candidate to take the reins of the MPA at a time when advances in the industry are dramatically changing its operations,” says Thomas Jelke, chairman of the board. “She is prepared and uniquely qualified to step seamlessly into the role as CEO after successfully managing the operations of the MPA for the past nine years.”

As COO, Alex managed a staff of 150 and a budget of more than $40 million. These designations are awarded solely to organizations that have excelled in all categories of parking operations.

“I am deeply honored by the trust the board has placed in my abilities to lead the MPA in very exciting times in our industry,” says Argudin. “I will lead this organization, with the support of the board and our committed staff, with strength, transparency and conviction.”

She takes over the position as CEO immediately, following Art Noriega’s appointment as city manager of Miami; he served as CEO of the MPA for the past 20 years.

“Alex has absolutely earned this opportunity and I wholeheartedly applaud the board’s decision to select her as the next CEO of MPA ,” says Noriega. “She is an extraordinary leader who will use her experience, knowledge and passion to successfully see the organization through the leading-edge changes that lie ahead.”

Argudin is a graduate of Florida International University with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration. She earned the CAPP designation through IPMI, and LEED AP designation from the Green Building Council. She currently serves on the executive board of the WOW Center as their Treasurer.

IPMI News: IPMI Launches New Monthly Magazine: Parking & Mobility

New publication mirrors the ever-expanding roles of parking, mobility, and transportation professionals in keeping people moving

(Anaheim, Calif., June 3, 2019) – Building on its long history of keeping readers abreast of the ever-changing and future-focused parking and mobility industry, this month, IPMI launched a new magazine, Parking & Mobility, and retired The Parking Professional after a long, esteemed history.

Parking & Mobility magazine reflects the changing roles of professionals in today’s interconnected, choice-driven network that encompasses parking, transportation, and mobility. The magazine features a masthead design in a custom font that connotes motion. Its coverage will continue to spotlight parking, which remains central to the industry, along with the broader scope of topics affecting members and industry professionals.

Each issue will feature news, analysis, case studies, and the expertise of IPMI members and industry leaders, which readers can tap to benefit their own organizations and communities.

“We gave a lot of consideration to changing the name of The Parking Professional, as we did with our organizational name change in October,” says IPMI CEO Shawn Conrad, CAE. “We naturally wanted the magazine to develop and mature with IPMI—to embrace mobility and the constantly shifting roles of our members.”

This industry evolution reflects the pivotal role parking and mobility professionals have long had in planning, designing and managing successful transportation ecosystems. New technology, along with the explosive growth of ride-hailing/transportation network companies and the need for expertise in curb management has also contributed.

Debut copies of the new magazine will be distributed at opening session of the IPMI Conference & Expo in Anaheim, Calif. June 6-12, and mailed to members at the same time. An online edition is available at parking-mobility.org/magazine.

Parking & Mobility welcomes article proposals and feedback. They should be directed to editor, Kim Fernandez at fernandez@parking-mobility.org.
