IPMI News: CAPP Scholarship Recipients Awarded Nearly $10,000 in 2020 to Advance the Profession

CAPP Scholarship Recipients Awarded Nearly $10,000 in 2020 to Advance the Profession

The International Parking & Mobility Institute (IPMI) this year provided nearly $9,000 in CAPP Scholarship funds to 17 industry professionals to further their professional educations.

CAPP is the premier credential for parking, mobility, and transportation professionals and is administered by IPMI in partnership with the University of Virginia. CAPP Scholarship funds are donated by industry members to help their colleagues continue professional development when courses, travel, or other factors are outside their budgets.

“2020 was a difficult year for our industry and, unfortunately, many of our individual members,” said Shawn Conrad, CAE, chief executive officer of IPMI. “Thanks to generous donations to the CAPP Scholarship fund, our people were able to continue learning and reaching their goals despite financial challenges.”

Recipients used scholarship funds to attend online education, the 2020 IPMI Virtual Parking & Mobility Conference & Expo, the 2020 IPMI Leadership Summit, and a host of webinars, seminars, and special offerings; these have become more vital with rapid technological and operational changes in the industry.

“We’re proud of the kindness and support IPMI’s members have shared with their colleagues and delighted to have been able to award scholarships and ultimately help advance someone’s career. We are grateful to everyone who’s made that possible through donations,” said Conrad.

IPMI offers significant resources free to our members to support the pursuit and maintenance of the industry’s leading credential, including both in-person and remote-proctored testing to assist our members during the continuing response to the COVID-19 crisis.  Know a colleague in transition? Let them know we are offering free transitional memberships for individuals looking for their next position as part of our Stay Connected efforts.

Racism is a subject many people don’t understand and are not comfortable discussing. While employers would rather not have these discussions, not discussing race is ignoring reality. Race has been an issue for centuries and it’s time to discuss it, understand it, and realize the impact and role it plays in the workplace.

Understanding racism will enable you to grow personally and professionally. This workshop will address perception versus reality. We will discuss systemic racism, what it is, what it looks like, and what it feels like. We’ll also discuss racial micro-aggressions and their impact on human resources, team building, and work relationships. We’ll finish with a plan on where to go from here. This topic may seem daunting but everyone needs to have this discussion. This session is for administrators, supervisors, team leaders, and team members. We will address this topic openly, carefully, and respectfully.

At the completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Explain Systemic Racism including what it is, its impact in the workplace, and how to recognize it.
  • Review the definitions of racial micro-aggressions and illustrate examples.
  • Complete a Self-Assessment and explore how to move forward in a group discussion.

Upskilling: You’re Worth It!

By Kathleen Federici, MEd

Why has upskilling suddenly become so important? The short answer is the digital economy. There is a relentless commitment to achieve more with less, especially now during the COVID pandemic.

Upskilling is the process of acquiring new and relevant competencies needed today and in the near future. Common examples of upskilling efforts include digital skills, analytics skills, and organizational transformation skills. Upskilling is being able to work socially in a digital world.

This sea of change means that many traditional jobs are morphing into something different or disappearing altogether. Upskilling is the process of preparing the workforce to fill these new positions. I have been asked by those furloughed or laid off what they should do now. My answer is to upskill. In the words of Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted, “When we come out of this, the digital economy will be even more powerful than it is now. This is a time to upskill yourself.”

According to the World Economic Forum, 65 percent of children entering primary school today will work in jobs that don’t exist yet. To survive and thrive in this economy, we need to be agile, and that means seizing new skills by upskilling your skills.

When you think about upskilling yourself, set your own goals. What do you want to do and why? Identify the new skills you will need to accomplish that goal you just set. Google and Udemy are two websites that offer free upskilling courses. Of, course, IPMI has your back when it comes to upskilling by way of the CAPP credential.

Build your upskilling plan in the comfort and safety of your living room. You’re worth it.

IPMI Welcomes 43 New CAPPs

(August 4, 2020) The International Parking & Mobility Institute (IPMI) celebrates the achievements of 43 new CAPPs who have earned the parking and mobility industry’s highest certification this year.

This year’s new CAPPs come from private and public parking organizations that include universities, cities, corporations, commercial operators, consultants, and technology providers.

CAPP, recognized worldwide as the leading credential in parking and mobility, is administered by IPMI and an independent board, in partnership with the University of Virginia. The CAPP curriculum covers the entire range of knowledge, skills, and abilities required to succeed in the field, including parking and mobility management; design, rehabilitation and maintenance; financial and operational auditing; project management, operations management, public relations and technology .

“CAPPs exemplify professionalism in our industry,” says IPMI CEO Shawn Conrad, CAE. “They advance the profession through their leadership, expertise, and willingness to give back to the community.”

According to an IPMI member survey, more than 90 percent of new CAPPs credit the credential with helping them achieve greater personal satisfaction, acquiring knowledge to do their jobs better, developing a broader peer network, and earning greater respect within their organizations. More than 75 percent credit CAPP with increasing the likelihood of attaining a promotion.

Mentoring programs and remote testing are now available to new applicants.
