Description: Arizona State University has done over the past five years to create a safe environment for pedestrians to be able to walk around campus without being hit by skateboarders, bikes, carts, and facility vehicles. This case study will start with the planning phase of the program and move forward through the policy, construction and added job duties that have been created.
Objectives:

- Identify safety access for campus-wide initiatives
- Strategies to future proof facilities for new technologies
Presenters:
J.C. Porter, CAPP serves as Assistant Director for Commuter Services, which includes oversight of the bicycle program, alternate transportation options, the walk-only zones, permit sales and appeals on the Tempe campus, Poly Tech campus, West campus and Downtown campus. JC also received the city of Tempe Bike Hero of the year award for 2018 and the President’s Award for Sustainability in 2017 for his commitment to bicycling for ASU and the city of Tempe.
Arnold (Gabe) Mendez, CAPP has been with ASU’s Parking and Transit Services since June 2008. He serves as the assistant director of strategic support where he provides support and leadership in the areas of strategic planning, parking technology applications, reporting, and involvement with department initiatives including campus access master planning. He has coordinated the department’s campus-wide technology projects and currently part of the team building a new parking garage and designing/planning two more.
