Paris Prepares to Ban More Cars

Paris, France, is known for its tough stance on cars in the downtown area. But this week marked the first time surrounding municipalities joined the city in a new ban on certain cars in certain areas.

Depending on the year and fuel they use, some older vehicles won’t be able to enter the area inside the A86 autoroute, the second ring-road around Paris. The ban will tighten between July 2019 and 2025, eventually keeping diesel vehicles built before 2010 and higher-emitting, gasoline-powered cars built before 2006, out of the area.

While the downtown has enacted such bans before, this is the first time nearby towns agreed to join; the area is a large one that includes several suburbs that are car-dependent now.
