A 2017 audit found about 26,000 active disabled parking placards issued to people age 100 or older in California. The problem is, there are only about 8,000 people that age in the state and very few are still driving.
Last week, a new law went into effect that will match placard applications and active permits with Social Security records and cancel those issued to deceased people.
California currently has 3 million disabled parking placards in use. Authorities believe at least several hundred thousand are fraudulent and hope the new system will find them.
