Continued education through the workplace is something I have learned to love. A formal education is nice, but I didn’t get the opportunity to pursue higher education after high school so I’ve always tried to learn something or take something away from every job.

I started working when I was 14 at a hole-in-the-wall chicken joint that would pique my interest in the culinary arts. From then on, restaurant to restaurant, I learned a little more at each place. Sometimes it was good and sometimes it was what not to do, but I was learning.

As the years went by, my interest for the arts put me into a predicament. Do I continue to cook because it’s all I know? Or do I seek a new path? Many years and a few jobs later, I applied for the position I have now—scared to death that I’m going to mess it up somehow or that I won’t be able to do what’s needed.

Months have passed and every day, I learn something new— computer skills, team building, accountability for the team, taking initiative and most of all, compassion. I get to see some of the most inspiring people every day.

It’s important to always strive to learn and grow and never quit trying to be a better you than yesterday’s you. Take as many classes as you can, whether it be CPR, knitting, martial arts, professional development, or even cooking. I’m excited to be a part of something I really enjoy and thankful for the knowledge I’ll receive as the days roll on.
